Comcast Corporation
Comcast’s corporate history begins in 1963, when Ralph Roberts purchased American Cable Systems, a 1,200-subscriber community-antenna cable system in Tupelo, Mississippi. American Cable Systems was renamed Comcast and incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1969, and the company made its first public stock offering in 1972 under the Nasdaq ticker CMCSA. [1]
The company’s 2025 Form 10-K describes Comcast as a global media and technology company organized around two primary businesses. Connectivity & Platforms includes broadband, wireless, video, and wireline voice services in the United States, United Kingdom, and Italy, together with Sky-branded entertainment television networks. The company’s principal consumer and business brands include Xfinity, Comcast Business, Sky, and NOW. [2]
Content & Experiences supplies the other major part of the model. Comcast says its businesses produce, distribute, and stream entertainment, sports, and news through brands such as NBC, Telemundo, Universal, Peacock, and Sky, and own and operate Universal theme parks. NBCUniversal describes itself as a Comcast subsidiary whose activities span film, television, streaming, theme parks, and consumer experiences. [2] [3]
The central corporate combination behind this structure was the 2011 transaction with General Electric that created NBCUniversal, LLC. GE contributed NBC Universal’s cable networks, filmed entertainment, televised entertainment, theme parks, and other investments; Comcast contributed cable networks and related assets, paid GE, owned 51% of the joint venture, and managed it. Comcast acquired GE’s remaining 49% common-equity stake in 2013 for approximately $16.7 billion. [4] [1]
That history explains why Comcast appears in records involving both communications infrastructure and media partnerships. The parent company supplies distribution platforms and connectivity, while NBCUniversal provides content, broadcast and cable networks, streaming, filmed entertainment, and location-based experiences; the entities are related through ownership, but NBCUniversal remains a separately described subsidiary in Comcast’s corporate reporting.
