Hangwei Medical Systems

GE Hangwei Medical Systems is the Beijing-based medical-device manufacturing entity associated with GE HealthCare China. GE HealthCare’s China profile identifies Hangwei as the first local factory established by GE Medical in China in 1991 through a joint venture with China’s former aerospace and health ministries. [1] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists GE HANGWEI MEDICAL SYSTEMS CO., LTD. as a business trade name under GE Healthcare (China) Co., Ltd., at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, with active registration status updated in 2026 and GE HealthCare Technologies Inc. shown as owner/operator. A GE account of the Beijing medical-systems industrial park records Hangwei’s early progression from trial production of three CT systems in 1991 through technology introduction, technical innovation, subsystem development, participation in global GE product development, and independent development of complete systems in China. [3] The same account describes the Beijing park as a combined engineering, design, production, sales, service, procurement, R&D, training, and product-display site for CT, MR, and X-ray equipment. [3] GE HealthCare’s current China profile says the company now operates six production bases containing seven factories and has a China R&D team of approximately 1,800 people. [1]

Hangwei is also the historical foundation of GE HealthCare’s long-running relationship with Sinopharm. Sinopharm says the two groups had cooperated for more than 30 years since establishing GE Hangwei, which it describes as the result of their first collaboration. [4] In February 2023, Sinopharm’s China National Medical Device Co., Ltd. and GE HealthCare China separately announced a new joint venture for the research, development, and manufacture of high-end medical-imaging equipment, with CMDC holding the majority stake.
