Peking University Health Science Center traces its history to the former Beijing National Medical School, founded on October 26, 1912. PKUHSC’s official history describes it as China’s first government-funded school designated to teach Western medicine; the institution later became Beijing Medical University and developed into the multidisciplinary health-science center associated with Peking University. [1]

A December 2025 PKUHSC information page reports five on-campus schools, six affiliated hospitals, four co-built hospitals and 11 teaching hospitals. It gives enrollment of 11,251 students and faculty of more than 14,617, and says the center offers education across basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, pharmaceutics, public health, stomatology and nursing. The page also notes that PKUHSC has admitted international students from 73 countries at different levels since 1953. [2]

Organizationally, PKUHSC is the health-science and academic-medical component of Peking University, not a standalone comprehensive university. Peking University’s current overview places Health Science among its six faculties and lists schools such as Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health and Nursing alongside affiliated hospitals. That relationship connects medical education, biomedical research and clinical training to Peking University’s wider university system while preserving PKUHSC’s specialized schools and hospital network.
