Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) traces its institutional history to Nanyang College, founded in Shanghai in 1896 by Sheng Xuanhuai. [1] Its early curriculum included railway engineering, electrical engineering and maritime studies, and the school built an electrical-engineering laboratory before 1911. [1]

In 1921, the Shanghai institution joined with several technical and communications schools to form the Chiao Tung University system. [1] After the main body relocated westward to Xi'an in 1955, Shanghai and Xi'an operated as branches under unified administration; in 1959 they became independent institutions, with the Shanghai branch formally named Shanghai Jiao Tong University. [1]

SJTU expanded its postgraduate and disciplinary base during the reform era: it began trial graduate-school operations in 1984, opened Minhang Campus in 1985, entered Project 211 in 1995, and was included in Project 985 in 1999. [1] In 2005 it merged with Shanghai Second Medical University, creating the School of Medicine and adding a major medical dimension to its engineering and science heritage. [1]

Today SJTU describes itself as a comprehensive, research-intensive university with schools spanning science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, humanities, law and agriculture. [2] Its official international profile lists six Shanghai campuses and more than 100 graduate programs taught in English or Chinese for international students, while the university gives its Minhang contact address as 800 Dongchuan Road.
