Wuhan University
Wuhan University traces its history to Ziqiang Institute, founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, then governor of Hubei and Hunan. After several name changes, the institution became National Wuhan University in 1928. The university’s modern structure was announced in 2000 through the amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University [1].
The current university is a comprehensive national institution directly administered by China’s Ministry of Education and a member of the 985, 211 and Double First-Class university programs. Its official profile, with data stated as of March 2026, lists 13 disciplinary fields, 42 colleges, three affiliated tertiary hospitals, 131 undergraduate majors, 58 master’s-authorizing first-level disciplines, 54 doctoral-authorizing first-level disciplines and 47 postdoctoral research stations [2].
Research infrastructure is correspondingly broad. Wuhan University reports seven national key laboratories, two national engineering-technology research centers, two national field scientific-observation stations, seven Ministry of Education humanities and social-science key research bases and 29 regularly published specialist journals. Its international profile states that the university has cooperative relationships with more than 310 universities and research institutes in over 53 countries and regions [1] [2].
