East China Normal University (ECNU) was founded in Shanghai in October 1951 and describes itself as the first normal university established after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Its founding drew on the arts, science, and education faculties of Kwang Hua University and incorporated departments from Great China University and Saint John’s University. This origin gave ECNU a teacher-education mission while also connecting it to Shanghai’s pre-1949 higher-education institutions. [1] [2]

ECNU’s subsequent institutional milestones include selection as one of China’s 16 National Key Universities in 1959, establishment of its Graduate School in 1986, inclusion in Project 211 in 1996, and inclusion in Project 985 in 2006. In 2017, the university says it was selected as a Category A institution in China’s Double First-Class University Program. [1] [3]

The university’s academic structure now spans education sciences, earth sciences, humanities and social sciences, basic sciences, economics and management, information technology, law and politics, and the arts. Its listed schools and departments include education, psychology, ecology, Chinese language and literature, mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, computer science, data science, law, music, fine arts, and design. [4]

ECNU operates campuses in Shanghai’s Minhang and Putuo districts and reports more than 35,000 students, more than 6,000 international students, and more than 4,400 faculty and staff. Its stated interdisciplinary action plans include Education+, Ecology+, Health+, AI+, and Internationalization+, showing how the institution presents teacher education alongside research and public-facing work in science, technology, health, and the humanities.
