New York University’s official bulletin traces the institution to its founding in 1831 and describes an early commitment to urban, professional and broadly accessible higher education. The bulletin’s institutional timeline includes the College of Arts and Science in 1832, the School of Law in 1835, medicine in 1841, business in 1900, and later schools in the arts, engineering, nursing, public service and global public health. [1]

Today NYU remains anchored in New York City while operating degree-granting campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai and study-away sites around the world. Its current bulletin says the university has more than 65,000 students, undertakes $1 billion in research annually, and draws students from nearly every U.S. state and 133 countries. NYU therefore combines a large private research university in New York with a deliberately networked international model. [1]

NYU Shanghai is a defining part of that network. Its official profile calls it China’s first Sino-US research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU Global Network; it was founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with support from Shanghai and Pudong. The campus reports nearly 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, English-language instruction with Mandarin proficiency requirements, 19 undergraduate majors, and opportunities for students to study away in New York, Abu Dhabi or other NYU centers.
