FedEx Express began as Federal Express, the company founded by Frederick W. Smith after he proposed a system for moving time-sensitive shipments through a coordinated air-ground network. Federal Express began operations in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 17, 1973, with 389 team members; that first night, 14 aircraft carried 186 packages to 25 U.S. cities. FedEx’s historical account says Memphis was selected for its central location, relatively reliable weather, available hangar space, and airport support. [1]

The original operation grew from domestic overnight delivery into international express transportation. FedEx records the start of intercontinental operations to Europe and Asia in 1984 and later renamed Federal Express as FedEx Express to position it within the broader FedEx Corporation portfolio. The present operating-company profile uses the legal-style name Federal Express and identifies Memphis as its headquarters. [1] [2]

Federal Express currently provides integrated expedited, standard, and economy offerings for business and residential package shipping. FedEx says the network serves more than 220 countries and territories, and its express service pages describe time-definite international delivery options ranging from one to three business days for selected services. [2] [3]

FedEx’s 2025 global economic-impact report describes the wider network as connecting more than 220 countries and territories, moving more than $2 trillion in goods annually, and operating with approximately 700 aircraft and 17 million average daily shipments in fiscal 2025. Those figures describe the broader FedEx network, while Federal Express is the operating company responsible for the integrated express transportation portfolio. [4]
