Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is Guangzhou’s principal aviation gateway and a major airport for Guangdong and southern China. A Guangzhou government profile says the airport was established in the 1930s and relocated to its present site in 2004, where it became one of China’s three major aviation hubs, a core aviation hub for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and a significant international aviation hub. [1] The airport is located about 28 kilometers from central Guangzhou at the junction of Baiyun and Huadu districts. [1]

The airport’s published facilities profile describes two passenger terminals, three runways, 269 standard aprons including FBO stands, and an annual passenger-handling capacity of 80 million for the two terminals described there. [1] The same government profile identifies connections with Guangzhou Metro Line 3, urban and long-distance buses, taxis, and Guangzhou–Shenzhen Intercity Railway through the airport’s integrated transportation center. [1] China Southern Airlines is identified as a base carrier, and the airport’s route network in that profile included more than 140 domestic and more than 90 overseas destinations. [1]

Baiyun’s expansion has continued through the airport’s third-phase project, which the government profile says began in September 2020. [1] Guangzhou government reporting said the airport’s annual passenger throughput first exceeded 80 million on December 17, 2025, including more than 16.6 million international passengers. [2] The airport’s new Terminal 3 entered full international operations after the second phase of airline relocation was completed on January 22, 2026, transferring international and regional flights formerly operating from Terminal 1, including services by 30 international and regional carriers. [3] These milestones place Baiyun within the transport infrastructure supporting Guangzhou’s trade, manufacturing, tourism, and wider Greater Bay Area connectivity. [1] [2]
