General Motors Company
The current General Motors Company is a Delaware corporation incorporated in 2009, and GM says it began operations when it acquired substantially all of the assets of Motors Liquidation Company, formerly General Motors Corporation, in July 2009. [1] The company’s operating history reaches back to 1908, when William C. Durant founded the General Motors holding company; GM’s heritage materials describe Durant’s effort to assemble a multi-brand automotive business. [2] [3]
GM’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company designs, builds, and sells trucks, crossovers, cars, and automobile parts and provides software-enabled services and subscriptions worldwide. [4] Its automotive operations are reported through GM North America and GM International, with vehicles developed, manufactured, or marketed under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands; GM also reports equity interests in entities serving markets, primarily in China, under the Baojun, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Wuling brands. [4]
GM is investing in electric vehicles, batteries, components, and related manufacturing capacity while retaining a portfolio that includes internal-combustion vehicles. [4] The company’s software platform supports connected features, OnStar services, and Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance, and GM says OnStar is available in more than 20 markets. [4] GM also provides vehicle and dealer financing through GM Financial, which offers retail loans and leases plus commercial lending to dealers. [4] In 2025, GM completed its acquisition of Cruise’s noncontrolling interests, began winding down Cruise’s robotaxi operations, and combined the GM and Cruise autonomous-technology efforts around personal vehicles.
