General Motors Company + SAIC Motor Corporation Limited

Analysis

SAIC General Motors Corporation Limited (SAIC-GM) was established in Shanghai in June 1997 as a 50-50 joint venture between SAIC Motor and General Motors. [1] GM's current China operations profile says the venture produces and sells Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles in China, and describes its work as part of GM's localized design, engineering, manufacturing and sales presence. [1]

The venture's early model was rapid localization. [2] Shanghai's government records that the first Buick sedan left the Jinqiao production line 23 months after construction began, and that the partners jointly established the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center to develop local vehicle design, engineering, validation and mass-production capabilities. [2] GM also identifies the center as a 50-50 China joint venture, while SAIC describes the broader cooperation as having developed from technology introduction and local manufacturing toward joint product and technology development. [1] [3]

The partnership entered a new formal phase on August 5, 2026, when SAIC Motor and GM signed an agreement extending the joint venture for 20 years to 2047. [2] The renewed arrangement calls for shareholder coordination of technology R&D, supply-chain and global-market resources, with local teams supported to lead new-energy and intelligent-vehicle development. [4] Shanghai's government says SAIC-GM plans to launch at least 30 new-energy models in China by 2030 and that the Buick Electra E7 is scheduled to become the company's first premium new-energy vehicle exported overseas. [2] [4]

SAIC-GM is therefore an active manufacturing and innovation partnership whose public terms now run through 2047. [1] [2] [4] The available announcements emphasize electrification, intelligent systems, local R&D and exports, but do not publish a new equity split beyond the continuing 50-50 structure or a partnership-level investment total for the renewal period. SAIC Motor Corporation Limited

Shanghai, Shanghai · 2 records in this database

SAIC Motor Corporation Limited is a Shanghai-headquartered listed automaker whose current corporate profile identifies complete vehicles, components, mobility services, finance, international operations and innovative technology as its main business areas. The company reports that 2025 wholesale sales reached 4.507 million vehicles and retail sales 4.67 million; its self-owned brands sold 2.928 million vehicles, new-energy-vehicle sales reached 1.643 million, and overseas sales totaled 1.071 million. [1]

The group’s industrial lineage is documented by SAIC as beginning with a Shanghai internal-combustion-engine-parts manufacturer established in 1955; Shanghai workers built the first Phoenix-brand sedan in 1958. Reform-era opening reshaped the company: Shanghai Volkswagen was founded in 1985, and SAIC and General Motors signed the Shanghai GM and Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center joint-venture contracts in 1997. These milestones connect SAIC’s local manufacturing base with the foreign-partner and engineering relationships that later supported broader vehicle development. [2] [3]

SAIC says its network now includes 13 complete-vehicle manufacturing bases in China, nine overseas vehicle-manufacturing or knock-down-assembly bases, products and services reaching more than 170 countries and regions, and more than 3,800 global marketing and service outlets. The same profile names ROEWE, MG, IM, MAXUS, Wuling and Baojun among its self-owned brands. These figures are company-reported and describe a group moving from a Shanghai-centered joint-venture model toward a mixed portfolio of domestic brands, electrification and international operations.
