Abbott + Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone

Analysis

Abbott announced in August 2011 that it would invest $230 million in a nutrition-products manufacturing facility in Jiaxing, Zhejiang. The company described the project as its largest investment in China at the time and expected it to employ about 300 people, reflecting a strategy to add local production capacity as its Chinese nutrition business grew. [1]

The facility was designed as an integrated site for producing powdered infant formula and children's nutritional products. Abbott's China citizenship report identified the investment as approximately RMB 1.4 billion, while the company's China history records the Jiaxing plant as a major local manufacturing commitment. [2] [3]

Abbott opened the plant in June 2014, several years after announcing and constructing it in the Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone. The operating partnership here is therefore best understood as place-based industrial cooperation: Abbott supplied capital, manufacturing systems and nutrition-product expertise, while Jiaxing's development zone hosted and supported a long-term production base serving China's domestic market.
