Ford Motor Company + CATL

Analysis

Ford's relationship with CATL is documented as a battery-technology and supply arrangement rather than an equity joint venture. In 2022, Ford said CATL would supply LFP packs for Mustang Mach-E vehicles in North America and later F-150 Lightning vehicles, while the companies signed a non-binding memorandum to explore battery cooperation in China, Europe and North America. [1]

In February 2023, Ford announced BlueOval Battery Park Michigan as a wholly owned subsidiary and said the plant would fabricate LFP cells using CATL's knowledge and services; Ford engineers would integrate the cells into its vehicles. Ford described a $3.5 billion investment, about 35 GWh of annual capacity and about 2,500 jobs at launch, with production planned for 2026. [2]

Ford presents LFP as using fewer high-demand materials while offering durability, lower cost and fast charging. It said the plant could supply batteries for roughly 400,000 future Ford EVs annually. [2]

Ford's 2026 update reported more than 500 employees, a target of 800 by year-end, and first full LFP prismatic cells under testing against CATL's production-verification practices. The releases support a differentiated model: CATL contributes technology and process know-how, while Ford owns the site and controls vehicle integration; public releases do not disclose royalty or pricing terms. Ford Motor Company has operated since 1903, when Henry Ford founded the company that would become the Ford global brand. Ford’s history identifies the Model T, introduced in 1908, as the vehicle that put the world on wheels, and identifies Highland Park as the site where the company’s moving assembly line was successfully introduced in 1913. [1] [2] [3]

The Model T was designed to be affordable, simple to operate, and durable, and Ford says more than 15 million were built and sold before production ended in 1927. The moving assembly line changed the production sequence by bringing the vehicle to workers station by station; Ford reports that the process reduced Model T assembly time to 90 minutes and helped lower its price from $825 in 1908 to $260 in 1925. [2] [3]

Ford’s current vehicle business is organized into three customer-focused segments: Ford Blue, which primarily covers Ford and Lincoln internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles and related parts and services; Ford Model e, which focuses on electric vehicles and digital-vehicle technologies; and Ford Pro, which serves commercial customers. Ford also provides financial services through Ford Credit and has an integrated-services effort for software-enabled customer experiences. [4]

Ford remains based in Dearborn, Michigan, and reports operations across North America and more than 125 countries. Its present scope combines vehicle design, manufacturing, marketing, financing, servicing, electrification, software, and commercial-fleet offerings, making the company both a mass-market automaker and a provider of related mobility and financial services. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) was established in 2011 by the founding team behind Amperex Technology Limited, a lithium-ion battery company focused on consumer electronics. [1] CATL’s stated mission is to provide technology, products and services for global new-energy applications and to help build a zero-carbon energy ecosystem. [1] Its development has taken battery expertise from portable electronics into passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, stationary storage and newer applications such as vessels and aircraft. [1]

CATL’s product and solution portfolio includes EV battery systems, commercial-vehicle batteries, electrochemical energy-storage systems, battery swapping and battery-recycling services. [2] Its 2025 annual report describes representative products such as Qilin, Shenxing, Freevoy, Tectrans, TENER and Naxtra, and says these products serve both front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter storage as well as passenger and commercial vehicles. [2]

In its 2025 results announcement, CATL reported RMB423.7 billion in revenue, RMB72.2 billion in net profit attributable to shareholders, 661 GWh of lithium-battery sales and RMB22.1 billion of research-and-development investment. [3] The same announcement, citing SNE Research, reported a 39.2% global power-battery share and first place in global energy-storage battery shipments for the fifth consecutive year; these are company-reported or cited market figures, not an independent assessment in this profile. [3]

CATL also treats materials recovery as part of its battery business. [4] Through its subsidiary Brunp Recycling, it describes a closed loop from battery production and use through recycling, remanufacturing and resource regeneration; as of December 31, 2024, CATL reported more than 240 waste-battery collection depots, 270,000 tonnes of disposal capacity and a 99.6% recovery rate for nickel, cobalt and manganese.
