Analysis
Otis entered its first China joint venture in 1984, when Otis Elevator Company joined with the former Tianjin Elevator Company and China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC). Otis's China history page confirms that 1984 marked its first joint venture in China, while a published court record identifies the three-party structure and the July 16, 1984 articles of association for China Tianjin Otis Elevator Co. [1] [2]
The original arrangement combined local manufacturing and market access with Otis technology and know-how. The court record describes engineering assistance for installation, operation and maintenance, training for sales and service personnel, and a China trademark license subject to Otis quality-control approval. It also records a royalty on net sales for Otis know-how and an arrangement under which Otis served as sole distributor for sales, installation and maintenance outside China. [2]
Tianjin subsequently became a major manufacturing and development base for Otis China. Otis currently reports about 15,000 employees in China, factories in Tianjin, Hangzhou, Chongqing and Jiaxing, and a Shanghai research center it describes as the company's largest worldwide; its products serve commercial buildings, housing, rail transit, airports, railway stations, hospitals and other public facilities. A 2024 TEDA account describes the Tianjin manufacturing base as Otis's largest elevator manufacturing base worldwide, its only high-speed-elevator manufacturing base and a global production site for traction machines and other core components. [1] [3]
The relationship has also developed beyond the original 1984 entity. In November 2024, Tianjin's government and Otis signed a strategic cooperation agreement covering smart manufacturing, elevator modernization, aftermarket services and talent development. Otis's current annual report separately describes its principal China structure as Otis Elevator (China) Investment Company, established as a joint venture in 1998, and Otis Electric, established in 1997, so current Tianjin activity should not be assumed to be legally identical to the original three-party venture. Otis’s official history identifies 1853 as the year Elisha Graves Otis sold his first elevator after inventing the elevator safety brake. The mechanism addressed the risk of a hoisting rope breaking, and the company’s timeline records Otis’s first passenger elevator installation in 1857 at New York City’s five-story E.V. Haughwout Building. The safety device helped make vertical passenger movement commercially credible as cities and buildings grew upward. [1]
The 2025 annual report describes Otis as an elevator and escalator manufacturer, installer, service provider and modernizer. Its New Equipment segment designs, manufactures, sells and installs passenger and freight elevators, escalators and moving walkways, while its Service segment maintains, repairs and modernizes equipment from Otis and other manufacturers. For 2025, the report shows net sales of $14.431 billion: $4.989 billion in New Equipment and $9.442 billion in Service. [2]
Otis separated from United Technologies and became independent again in 2020, according to its historical timeline. The current company says it serves more than 200 countries and territories, moves about 2.5 billion people each day, and maintains more than 2.5 million customer units worldwide. Its current systems include connected monitoring through the Otis ONE platform, while the 2025 filing reports more than 1,400 branches and offices, 11 research-and-development centers and 16 manufacturing facilities. The corporate office is in Farmington, Connecticut. [1] [2] [3]

Tianjin Elevator Company, also described in historical sources as Tianjin Elevator Works, was the Chinese industrial partner in Otis's first joint venture in China. [1] Otis's current China history says it established its first Chinese joint venture in 1984, while the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area identifies the local partner specifically as the former Tianjin Elevator Company. [2]
A legal opinion summarizing the historical record describes China Tianjin Otis Elevator Company as a 1984 joint venture among Otis, Tianjin Elevator and China International Trust & Investment Corporation. [3] It says the venture was directed toward manufacturing elevators and escalators in China under Otis design standards and the Otis trademark, with technical and trademark agreements supplying engineering, production, maintenance and quality know-how. [3]
The venture belongs to the early reform-era pattern of bringing foreign technology and management into Chinese manufacturing while using a local industrial partner and market base. [4] Contemporary Harvard Business School case materials describe Otis's China market-entry strategy through a joint venture with Tianjin Elevator Works, which makes the entity relevant as a historical example of technology transfer and localization rather than as a current global elevator brand. [4]
The former Tianjin Elevator Company should not be conflated with Otis Elevator (China) Investment Company Limited or with Otis Electric. [5] Otis's 2025 annual report describes those later entities as its principal China joint ventures, and says Otis China was established in 1998 while Otis Electric was established in 1997; the report does not identify the historical Tianjin Elevator Company as a current standalone operating group.
