Analysis
Tesla and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) began their publicly documented relationship with a February 2020 framework agreement for lithium-ion power batteries. Reuters, reporting CATL's stock-exchange disclosure, said the initial supply period ran from July 2020 through June 2022 and that Tesla would determine purchase volume according to its needs, with no volume restriction stated in the agreement. [1]
CATL's 2021 annual-report disclosure describes the February 2020 agreement as making CATL the first Chinese battery supplier to Tesla for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries and records a further agreement in June 2021 to deepen cooperation. Contemporary reporting of the later framework agreement said CATL would supply lithium-ion battery products from January 2022 through December 2025, extending the relationship beyond the initial term. [2] [3]
The commercial center of gravity has been Tesla's China supply chain. Reuters described CATL as a major LFP supplier for Tesla's Shanghai factory and reported in January 2025 that the companies were working on a technology-licensing arrangement connected with battery production in Nevada; those reports indicate cooperation extending beyond a simple cell purchase, but do not disclose a definitive licensing contract or its economics. [4]
Tesla's 2025 Form 10-K still identifies CATL among the suppliers of cells used in Tesla vehicles, supporting an ongoing supplier relationship, but it does not publish a new CATL contract term, price, volume or current product allocation. The active classification is therefore based on Tesla's current supplier disclosure and the documented history of renewed agreements, not on an independently reported annual CATL volume or a disclosed equity partnership. Tesla was incorporated on July 1, 2003, and its corporate headquarters is at 1 Tesla Road in Austin, Texas. [1] The company's first production vehicle was the Roadster, which Tesla says debuted in 2008; the company then expanded its vehicle range with the Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y. [2]
Tesla's 2025 Form 10-K describes two reportable segments: automotive, covering the design, development, manufacture, sale and lease of fully electric vehicles plus related services; and energy generation and storage, covering solar-generation and battery-storage products, services and incentives. [3] The filing also says Tesla generally sells directly to customers and is expanding its retail, service and charging footprint. [3]
The vehicle business includes battery-electric cars and associated powertrain, software and service capabilities, while the energy business includes Powerwall for homes and small commercial facilities and Megapack for commercial, industrial, utility and generation customers. [3] Tesla also describes solar panels and Solar Roof as energy-generation offerings and uses software platforms such as Powerhub and Autobidder to monitor, control and optimize energy assets. [3]
Tesla's current corporate materials frame these activities as an integrated system of solar generation, batteries, electric vehicles and charging. [4] Its 2025 annual filing also records a June 2025 launch of Robotaxi, an autonomous ride-hailing platform, and ongoing development of AI-enabled products including Full Self-Driving software and the Optimus robot. [3] These are company-described products and objectives, not evidence that every announced capability is already broadly available or fully autonomous. [3] [4]

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) was established in 2011 by the founding team behind Amperex Technology Limited, a lithium-ion battery company focused on consumer electronics. [1] CATL’s stated mission is to provide technology, products and services for global new-energy applications and to help build a zero-carbon energy ecosystem. [1] Its development has taken battery expertise from portable electronics into passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, stationary storage and newer applications such as vessels and aircraft. [1]
CATL’s product and solution portfolio includes EV battery systems, commercial-vehicle batteries, electrochemical energy-storage systems, battery swapping and battery-recycling services. [2] Its 2025 annual report describes representative products such as Qilin, Shenxing, Freevoy, Tectrans, TENER and Naxtra, and says these products serve both front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter storage as well as passenger and commercial vehicles. [2]
In its 2025 results announcement, CATL reported RMB423.7 billion in revenue, RMB72.2 billion in net profit attributable to shareholders, 661 GWh of lithium-battery sales and RMB22.1 billion of research-and-development investment. [3] The same announcement, citing SNE Research, reported a 39.2% global power-battery share and first place in global energy-storage battery shipments for the fifth consecutive year; these are company-reported or cited market figures, not an independent assessment in this profile. [3]
CATL also treats materials recovery as part of its battery business. [4] Through its subsidiary Brunp Recycling, it describes a closed loop from battery production and use through recycling, remanufacturing and resource regeneration; as of December 31, 2024, CATL reported more than 240 waste-battery collection depots, 270,000 tonnes of disposal capacity and a 99.6% recovery rate for nickel, cobalt and manganese.
