Thermo Fisher Scientific + Innoforce Pharmaceuticals

Analysis

Thermo Fisher Scientific and Hangzhou-based Innoforce Pharmaceuticals announced a joint-venture agreement in November 2020 to establish a pharma-services facility in Hangzhou for integrated biologics and sterile-drug development and manufacturing. Thermo Fisher said the planned Good Manufacturing Practices site would join its global pharma-services network and was expected to be completed in 2022. [1]

The announced service scope covered both clinical and commercial work. Thermo Fisher identified biologics drug-substance development and manufacturing, drug-product development, sterile fill-finish, clinical-trial packaging and logistics as capabilities in its wider network, and said the Hangzhou site would use quality-control processes designed to meet or exceed China National Medical Products Administration, U.S. and European regulatory requirements. [1]

Thermo Fisher's 2022 annual report confirms that the company opened a new biologics manufacturing facility in Hangzhou to serve customers in China and the Asia-Pacific region, with integrated clinical and commercial drug-substance and drug-product capabilities. Contemporary reporting on the opening described an approximately 80,000-square-meter cGMP facility with process development, cell-line development, biologics drug-substance production, sterile fill-finish, 2,000-liter HyPerforma single-use bioreactors and a future path toward 5,000-liter DynaDrive capacity. [2] [3]

The partnership's public description is consequently a contract-development-and-manufacturing platform embedded in a larger Hangzhou biopharmaceutical campus, not a disclosed equity or revenue-sharing model. The reviewed announcements do not publish the parties' ownership percentages, contract value, customer list or a later termination date; the active classification rests on the documented facility opening and the continuing presence of Hangzhou in Thermo Fisher's pharma-services network. Innoforce's own 2022 announcement separately confirms staged GMP operations at its Hangzhou advanced-therapies site and the campus's relationship with the Thermo Fisher joint venture. [4] [2]

Innoforce Pharmaceuticals

Hangzhou, Zhejiang · 1 record in this database

Innoforce Pharmaceuticals is a Hangzhou-based biopharmaceutical company focused on development and manufacturing services for advanced therapies. Thermo Fisher’s announcement of its 2020 partnership with Innoforce describes the company as a bioinnovation-enabling corporation located in Hangzhou Bay Biotech Valley within the Hangzhou Airport Economic Demonstration Area. [1] Innoforce has presented its operating model as a partnership-focused platform that combines process development, GMP manufacturing, and collaboration with other biopharmaceutical service providers. [2]

In December 2022, Innoforce announced that it had commenced GMP manufacturing at a new Hangzhou site that also serves as its corporate headquarters. [2] The facility was designed to provide process-development and manufacturing services for RNA, plasmid DNA, viral vectors, and cell therapeutics across research, clinical, and commercial stages. [2] Innoforce described an investment of more than $200 million in a 550,000-square-foot advanced-therapies manufacturing base with plasmid bioreactors, viral-vector production capacity, automated cell-therapy suites, RNA in-vitro transcription and lipid-nanoparticle formulation, analytical-development laboratories, fill-finish lines, and warehousing. [2]

The company’s partnership with Thermo Fisher broadened the Hangzhou platform beyond advanced therapies. In November 2020, the companies announced a joint venture to establish a biologics and sterile-drug development and manufacturing facility in China, with expected capabilities in biologics manufacturing, sterile fill-finish, clinical-trial packaging, and logistics. [1] A 2021 Innoforce–dMed announcement described the campus as housing Innoforce CGTx Services for commercially capable cell- and gene-therapy manufacturing alongside the Thermo Fisher Biopharma Services Hangzhou joint venture for large-molecule biologics. [3] Innoforce is therefore best characterized as a manufacturing and development platform supporting other drug developers, rather than as a conventional single-product pharmaceutical company.
