Cummins Inc.
Cummins Inc. was founded in Columbus, Indiana, on February 3, 1919, by inventor Clessie Cummins with financial backing from William G. Irwin. The company’s historical account says Cummins was inspired by Rudolf Diesel’s technology and began by developing licensed oil-engine designs before creating its own engines; Cummins’ first direct-injection patent dates to 1921. The company changed its name from Cummins Engine Company to Cummins Inc. in 2001. [1] [2]
The early business focused on making compression-ignition engines practical for everyday uses. Cummins’ timeline records the Model U entering production in 1928, the introduction of a single-disc fuel system in 1929, natural-gas engines entering the assembly line in 1964, and later expansion into power generation and other applications. These milestones show a progression from diesel-engine development toward a broader power-technology portfolio. [2]
Cummins’ 2025 Form 10-K identifies five reportable segments: Engine, Components, Distribution, Power Systems, and Accelera. The company describes products and services including diesel, natural-gas, and alternative-fuel engines; electric and hybrid powertrains; integrated power-generation systems; aftertreatment, turbochargers, fuel systems, controls, transmissions, axles, and brakes; and zero-emissions battery and electric-powertrain systems. [3]
The portfolio serves transportation and industrial markets that require mobile or stationary power. Cummins’ company overview lists engines, power systems, components, Accelera zero-emissions solutions, and sales and service, and identifies applications including commercial buildings, data centers, healthcare, manufacturing, marine, mining, oil and gas, telecommunications, and other infrastructure. The company says its service network includes 3,700 locations worldwide. [1]
Cummins is managing the transition from conventional power systems alongside its established engine business. Its Destination Zero strategy is described as a commitment to help customers navigate the energy transition, while Accelera concentrates the company’s zero-emissions portfolio. That combination makes Cummins relevant to partnership records involving engines, generators, commercial vehicles, industrial equipment, and emerging electric or alternative-fuel systems; the relevant counterparty may be a Cummins segment, subsidiary, or technology partner rather than the parent in every case.
